It’s officially spring and I am so ready to celebrate with all the fruity dessert flavors! I’ve been craving donuts lately (when do I not crave donuts though) and we haven’t found a good donut spot by us since we moved. I was going to make these Apple Cinnamon Sugar Donuts but like I said, I was wanting something more fruity. I’ve never used freeze dried strawberries so decided to do a version with them and they turned out ah-mazing!
RECIPE TIPS:
Donut pans: This recipe makes 12 donuts so I use 2 donut pans that make 6 a piece. I ordered these off of amazon and they worked great! To ensure they don’t stick I always spray with Baker’s Joy or you can sometimes find a cheaper off brand version at your local grocery store! This stuff works EVERY time and your desserts will slide right out of the pan. Trust me, if you’re baking this is a must use.
Strawberry flavor: Strawberry desserts are one of the harder ones to get true flavor in. I didn’t want to change the texture because they’re so soft, so for this recipe I used freeze dried strawberries. I was able to find them at Walmart and Target but your local grocery store may have them too! I used a food processor to essentially make strawberry powder but you could also put them in a ziplock bag and crush them!
Filing the pans: Don’t be tempted to over fill these pans as these donuts do rise! If you overfill them they’ll turn into more muffin tops. You can also use the larger side of a small piping tip to punch out the centers to make them look prettier.
This recipe is packed with natural strawberry flavor and will have you reaching for more than one. They’re easy to make and you won’t have to break out to fryer. Strawberry Sugar Donuts
Ingredients
For the donuts:
- 5 tbsp salted butter melted
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 tbsp freeze dried strawberry powder
- ⅓ cup full fat sour cream
- 1 egg room temperature
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp corn starch
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- ¾ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp kosher salt
- ⅓ cup whole milk room temperature
For the strawberry sugar:
- ½ cup salted butter melted
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp freeze dried strawberry powder
Instructions
For the donuts:
- Preheat the oven to 350° and spray donut pans with nonstick spray. Add about ½ cup freeze dried strawberries to a food processor and pulse until powder. Alternately you can add to a zip lock bag and crush with a rolling pin.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer combine the melted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, freeze dried strawberry powder, sour cream and egg. Once combined, add in all of the dry ingredients. Mix on low until just incorporated. Add in the milk and mix until smooth.
- Fill a large piping bag with the batter or you can use a spoon to scoop it into each pan. Fill 12 donuts ⅔ of the way full. Bake for 13-15 minutes until cooked through. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes for turning out onto a cookie rack to cool completely.
For the topping:
- Add melted butter to a medium sized bowl. To another medium sized bowl mix together the sugared freeze dried strawberry powder. Dunk both sides of the donut into the butter (or use a pastry brush to brush it on) then dunk and cover the whole donut into the sugar mixture. Enjoy!
