First, let me start by saying that I probably could’ve named this recipe a number of different things. What does that mean exactly? Let me walk you through it. When I come up with a recipe idea I immediately run it by other people to see what they think. Would you eat this? What would you change? Isn’t this the most delicious thing you’ve ever heard of?! (but really, I probably say this multiple times a week) After working through the details in my head, I ran the idea by several friends and my husband and to my surprise, no one knew what I was talking about. It goes without saying that I was pretty dang frustrated.
It’s important to note that I wasn’t talking to anyone that grew up in Pittsburgh with me. When I went into detail on my idea I ended up discovering that they knew what they were! Turns out they called them by different names. My friends from Houston call them Frito Pie, my sister-in-law calls them Traveling Tacos, and the internet calls them Tacos in a Bag. Whatever you call them, here is a fun spin that’s perfect for celebrating Cinco de Mayo!
What is a walking taco?
A walking taco is exactly what it sounds like: taco fillings combined in a small Frito or Dorito bag. Where I grew up it was $1 for a walking taco, such a steal! Made at every high school sporting event, these were honestly one of the main attractions of attending. They’re just that good. After the games we would crowd the concession stands. you would pick your preferred chip and they would crush up the chips and load the bags up with all the fixings. I mean can it get any better?????
I wanted to do something easy, spicy, and salty to perfectly pair with a margarita (or 3 😉 ) for the holiday. As a bonus, it’s all the flavor you know without having to eat it out of a small plastic bag. I’d consider that a win-win! I like to make this for dinner or as an appetizer to feed a crowd. Can you imagine what your guests will think when you serve them these spunky nachos for game day?! #impressed
